Do wood chunks have a shelf-life?

I have some apple wood chunks that I bought in 2008. They've been in a plastic container that water can't penetrate. Are they still good? In general, do wood chunks and wood chips have a shelf-life?

So long as it’s dry, it shouldn’t go bad. Damp or wet, it would start to punk and rot.
